In this lesson we looked at Editorial strategy in preparation for designing our group site.

The key ideas to consider were:

  • Our audience – what demographic are we targeting?
  • The content – wide ranging or niche? Type of content – news, reviews, gossip, gig lists etc
  • Style and tone – Trashy? Serious? Reflective? A mix?
  • Media used e.g text, images and video

We looked at the way some other sites were set out. The celebrity gossip site  www.perezhilton.com was one example. The pink background catches the reader’s attention, the style of writing is frivolous and trashy with sensationalist headlines, a lot of video is used and the posts are very jumbled and disorganised. In contrast http://www.ivillage.co.uk/ has a more neutral white background, a more serious tone and it’s articles cover fashion and lifestyle.

We discussed general sites and niche sites, looking at the key aspects for each. General sites require writers to be knowledgeable on a wide range of subjects, and there needs to be a significant amount of material on the site. Niche sites are good if you have a special interest, writers need to be more knowledgable on the subject than the reader.
