So far so good, I have somehow managed, to get this far, nearly six days without music. Today will be testing though as I will have to confront the dreaded shorthand with my only form of entertainment during breaks unavailable to me. It will definitely be a challenge. After an hour and a half of monotony, music is a welcome escape; if only for twenty minutes. If I can negotiate that hurdle then completing my task will become slightly easier.

I will be relying on the internet (especially facebook) and my Playstation 2 to see me through to the end. One factor that is proving to be particularly testing is avoiding sampling all the new music that is on offer. I am always keen to discover new artists and their work, as I feel music is a fantastic outlet for broadening your horizons and opening your mind to genres and styles that you had never really considered before. In the midst of this abstinence I have been deprived of that. The timing happens to be very unfortunate as it my birthday next week and family and friends are quizzing me for gift ideas. New music is usually top of the list, but due to my abstinence I’m unable to sample new material.

The announcement of the line-up for this year’s Reading Festival is due next week and many people are creating mock posters in anticipation of that. I was eager to explore the music of these artists to get a taste of what could be on offer should they play at the festival. Unfortunately I must do without that pleasure for one more day, here’s hoping I make it.

Today did not start well at all, it all began at 8 am. I was rudely awoken by the fire alarm at this time, having anticipated a few extra hours of sleep as I had no lectures. The fifth day without music was underway. This day in particular was going to be a struggle. I settled down at my desk to work, at which point I would normally reach for my iPod, but of course this was forbidden.

It is a habit, something that I do automatically when I sit down to work as it helps me to concentrate. Such habits are something that a person is not always aware of. It is amazing how aware of it you become when the object connected to that habit is taken away. Music can be a big part of people’s lives, it’s everywhere although we are not always conscious of it. Now that I had been removed I was realising just how big a part of my life that it is. This was exacerbated by the fact that many other students had their own music blaring out around the student village throughout the day. The temptation to enjoy my own music, was a strong one but I resisted it, just… 2 days to go.

As part of my exploration of the world of blogging I have been given the task of giving something up for week. During this period I will then pour out my thoughts and feelings, to you lucky people.

I have been doing this for four days now, and it appears rather more difficult than I thought it would be. In my free time, in particular it is quite a problem. I have no television in my room on campus, so my main sources of entertainment are the internet, my radio and my iPod. The removal of music means that many of the radio stations I listen to and of course my ipod are now out of bounds. As a consequence my level of boredom is becoming harder to contend with. The other issue is lectures, in two of them I am in rooms where there are no computers, so the music on my iPod has become essential for occupying myself during the break. I didn’t realise how much I valued that until now…
